Rachael Ray: Rachael's Daytime Talkshow

Diaper Duty

Hi everyone!

Ricky and I are still adjusting to our new life as parents - changing diapers definitely takes some getting used to! I admit, since the baby was born we’ve had some unfortunate spillages, but we’ve gotten much better! I’m still working to get the swaddle down pat. Sometimes Kai looks like a burrito that’s gone too loose and that just means he’s not wrapped correctly. You can tell I’m not a cook! Rachael would’ve been a much better swaddler than me! When I get it right and when he’s nice and smooth and snug, it’s very gratifying. He’s able to rest and he looks so comfortable.

But this is a far cry from where we began …. Nursing is a commitment, and there are techniques and skills that make it easier on the mother and child - I’m sure other new moms would agree it’s amazing how much there is to learn! We are getting better, but you won’t believe some of the questions Ricky and I had during the pregnancy when we went to The Pump Station in LA for a baby-care class. I’m sure you can relate, so I’m going to share a bit of our experience with you. Check out the video from our first class and then write in to share your experiences and let me know how you are doing!

XO Gretta

First of all, let me say for the record to all you future dads out there - I really wish I had paid more attention during the pregnancy when Gretta and I took some baby-care classes! My mentality was more like, “I’ll do it when the baby arrives,” but now I find I can’t swaddle to save my life. I’m a perfectionist and I still can’t get it right! I want to be the dad that comes into the room and saves the day. I want to be the partner that can step in when Gretta is overwhelmed and get the baby to “magically” stop crying. But I now realize it’s not that simple …

Now that Kai is here and there’s a real baby that has many needs, the one thing I know is that I don’t know anything … at all! My advice to the fathers-to-be out there would be to start learning during the pregnancy and take as many classes as you can; I promise they’re actually pretty fun! To make it a little easier for you guys, I’m going to give you peek at the class that Gretta and I took at The Pump Station in LA – click on the video above to check it out! And I’m going to get back to Gretta and the baby now!

-Ricky
