Old worn out tile counters in kitchen and bathroom

Kristan,
I was wondering what can be done to cover/change existing tile on counter tops, especially in the kitchen. I live in an older home, probably built in the 50's and the tile on my counter tops is very worn and the grout is crumbling by the sink. I was hoping for an inexpensive fix since finances are tight right now. I really don't like the tile. It's very hard to clean up after making meals. Plus the grout is old. The tile is also 2x2 inch squares. Are there any suggestions?
