Kitchen formica "70s" cabinets

Hello,
My question is.... is there anything I can do with these outdated cabinets except replace them. Since that is not in the budget at the moment I wanted to see if there was any tips of maybe painting, covering, sanding, something that can be done with my white elephants that are in my kitchen. The 1970 white formica just doesnt cut it in my contemporary, fall tone house. All my rooms are working together except for the heart of my house. Please let me know.
