At-Home Do-It-Yourself Tips
Doug Wilson from TLC's Moving Up and Trading Spaces drops by to share a few great decorating and space-saving tips. Better yet, they're easy on the wallet!
Organize an overcrowded bathroom
This shower curtain with pockets (available at Bed, Bath and Beyond) is a great space-saver and keeps the clutter down in a high-traffic bathroom. Plus, color-coded towels end the mystery of what belongs to whom.
Get creative with kitchen utensil cabinet door handles
"I try to come up with different ways to use everyday items around the house," says Doug, who bought these serving spoons at a restaurant supply store. Drill a couple of holes in them and your cabinet doors, slip a couple of screws in and a nut in the back, and you've just updated the look of your kitchen for practically nothing!
Save space with a fold-up step stool
If you're like Rachael and among the "vertically-challenged," reaching items on high shelves is next to impossible without a stool. This fold-up step stool not only gets you up there, but also folds away to save valuable space.
Install a baking rack for extra storage
Mount a baking rack on the back of a door or in a closet. Get some 'S' hooks at the hardware store and you've just found room for ties, belts, even jewelry. "It's just found space," says Doug. "It can be in the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and it's dirt cheap!"
Decorate with corn husks
"We're going to take corn and use it in a different way," Doug explains as he wraps corn husks around a picture frame and secures them with pushpins. When the husks dry out too much, wrap them again! It's a great project for kids.
