The Biden Family's Holiday Traditions

The Biden Family's Holiday Traditions
Aired on: December 15, 2010

Jill Biden is a mom, a grandmother, a college professor and she also happens to be the second lady of the United States of America! "I think organization helps," explains the busy wife of Vice President Joe Biden, "so I try to be very organized, and because I’m teaching full time and, of course, I have this incredible job as second lady which I love, I have so many opportunities and I don’t want to miss anything, so I try to do it all!"

Jill says that when she and Joe do get a free moment together, they enjoy reconnecting. "Actually, we had a date night last week," she smiles. "He got home kind of late, so I said, 'Let’s run to a movie!' So we ran to a movie. It was Black Swan. I loved it, but he didn’t love it so much. Well, I’m an English teacher - I love the drama and the intrigue."

This holiday, the couple will be hosting a big, festive gathering with their family. "On Christmas Eve I cook, and I think this year it will be 28 people - and it's spaghetti and meatballs," Jill tells Rachael. "Joe had that growing up and I had that growing up, so we carried on that tradition ... All my kids and grandchildren stay overnight and in the morning after Santa comes, we wake up and we wait at the top of the stairs and Joe goes down to see if Santa has come, and then we all go down and open our gifts."

But she won't have to wait until Christmas to see all the members of her family, she brought some along to our studio! "Please welcome Delaware’s Attorney General Beau and his 6-year-old Natalie!" Rachael says. Beau is a captain in the Delaware National Guard, so she asks what it's like for military families at this time of year. "For those who are deployed there’s extra stress because they’re away from their family," he says, "but the reality is, I think it's tougher on the family stateside. The soldiers that are doing their job are trained to do it, they go over and they complete their mission, they’re in the moment. But you know it’s the families at home, the moms and dads, the spouses, brothers and sisters and sons and daughters. I think that’s who it’s toughest on."

Rachael encourages everyone to show their support to military families, especially this time of year, and invites the audience to write holiday cards, which are under their seats! "The Red Cross has given us all these beautiful holiday cards," she says. "If you’re an artist, doodle a picture or something. We’re all going to fill out our cards and right after the show today, we’re going to send them off to our soldiers!"
