When Oprah bravely opened up on her show about her recent 40-pound weight gain, fitness guru Bob Greene had her ask herself, "Why am I overweight?" He explains to Rachael, "The truth is, there's always something underlying ... There's a void where you don't know what it is but there's something missing. Food is that companion that's always around. That's when food gets abused and that's when you run into problems."

He tells Rachael one component that is key to living your best life. "It really is all about the rest of your life and the barriers that we all put in front of ourselves. And the number one barrier, especially among women, is a feeling that they don't deserve the life that they dream of. And that can be reinforced early on ... anytime anyone feels they don't deserve something they will find ways to sabotage themselves -- guaranteed."

Rachael asks Bob how he would suggest people get motivated to begin a weight loss program, whether it's their first time or they've been on different diets all their lives. "I always start with the person's psyche," Bob says. "In other words, are they doing it for the right reasons? Are they pressured by a spouse or pressured by people around them or do they really want this great life for themselves? That's the first step ... it's not about the weight, the weight is a symptom of something else that needs to change. And if you view it that way you'll understand the problem. If you're not ready to do it you shouldn't. Because you're going to set yourself up for failure."

For people who feel hopeless about dropping weight, Bob has a plan. "I always make people identify the areas in their lives that are going well -- are their friendships good, do they like their career?" After doing that, Bob suggests that they do the opposite. "Go through your life and systematically identify what's off. When you do that, that's where the magic is. That's where your excess weight can actually be a golden opportunity to identify some meaningful way you can change your life."

In addition to developing an upcoming Wii exercise game, Bob tells Rachael about a project that he's excited about -- educating people about osteoarthritis, a condition that affects 27 million Americans. "In my family I have a history of OA," he says. "My grandmother had a very serious case of it and my father struggles with it." Bob explains that there are oral and topical medications available, and that his program will cover other things people can do. "Part of the project will be a video about how to exercise," he says. "And diet plays a part as well. It can very well be managed, especially these days because there are some new exciting treatments."

Bob and Rachael head to the kitchen where he shows her a healthier version of one of her favorite dishes -- a "no-cheese" vegetable lasagna from his Best Life Diet Cookbook.
