Bob Greene's Four-Step, Age-Defying Plan
As Oprah's fitness guru, Bob Greene made an astounding 50 appearances on her show. "I had no idea," he says. "I thought maybe it was around 12!" When pressed to pick his favorite episode, Bob says he would love to choose one that showed a dramatic change to someone's life, but ultimately, it was Oprah and Gayle's camping trip. "I just can't forget that one," he laughs. "And it's so funny when you know both of them."
As Oprah moves on to the next phase of her life with projects on her OWN network, Bob is actually trying to go back in time! "I am trying to turn back the clock," he says, adding that his "20 Years Younger" program is not only about looking younger, but feeling younger as well. Bob breaks down his plan into four pillars:
• Exercise
"If you think about what aging is, it's a deterioration of tissue, for the most part. There are others things, but that's the primary effect - a loss of muscle, a loss of bone and even a loss of nerve tissue. And we know the number one way to overcome that is with exercise, both cardio and strength."
• Good nutrition
"In general, the rules haven't changed: Get rid of the empty calories (and most of us know what those are), and slowly replace them with good, nutritious items. The top ones are super foods, and we've resisted them. Brussels sprouts - I couldn't eat them growing up or even a year ago, but if you prepare them the right way, I love them now. Also, kale is amazing. And comfort food is one of my favorites, as it is for most people, but take, for example, a shepherd's pie; take out the potatoes, which aren't that bad, and slide in a sweet potato. That's a super food and is loaded with nutrition. So, simple things like that."
• Skin care
"I grew up in a time when we didn't know about sunscreen and I spent my life outdoors. So I had to play catch up. I elicited Dr. Harold Lancer out of Beverly Hills. And it's not just that he has these products, it's about the system. I started removing dead skin and I had hundreds of bits of sun damage that could some day be cancerous. And literally, within two months of this system of taking off the dead skin, washing it away and replacing it with a trigger that oxygenates the skin, they were gone."
• Sleep
"The sweet spot is between 7 and 9 hours a night. But what people don't realize is that there are different stages of sleep, plus REM. There are three stages of one type of sleep, where stage 3 is where you get all the repairing of the body (REM sleep is more repairing of your emotions, your mind). But, most of us do things that prevent us from getting into that stage. Either too much light, or we're not consistent with our time, or maybe your mattress. I bought a Tempur-Pedic two years ago (I have to mention they are sponsoring part of my tour) but it changed the way I sleep. So get a good mattress, one that fits you and your habits."
Bob adds that there is a possible fifth element - attitude. "People who are positive about their aging and about their life live longer, and obviously live better," Bob says. "Stress makes it harder to exercise, harder to eat right, and you accelerate every area of aging."
