"Boys Don't Cook?" - Bobby Flay Begs To Differ
Nine-year-old Alec thinks boys don't belong in the kitchen. "One day my dad made chicken nuggets and he burned them because I was playing video games with him," he remembers. "That gave me the idea that boys shouldn't be in the kitchen."
Rachael assures him that men really can cook. "In my family, everyone cooks -- especially on the Sicilian side. All the men pride themselves on being great cooks. My grandfather had 10 children and he was the big cook in the family ... he was the one who taught my mom how to cook. I could never have married a man who didn't know how to cook." Unfortunately, Alex, still scarred from the nuggets experience, remains unconvinced about men's abilities in the kitchen. Rachael asks her good friend, celebrity chef Bobby Flay, to see if he can help.
Bobby tells Alec how he got started. "I was probably 8 or 9 years old and the first thing I remember cooking in the kitchen was chocolate pudding. It was out of a box but the really cool thing about it was that the more I stirred it, the thicker it got and I thought 'wow, this is incredibly cool!' Plus, you get to lick the spoon."
"That's my favorite part!" says Alec.
Bobby convinces Alec to help him make Chocolate Pudding, with the caveat that Alec gets to lick the spoon this time!
Success! See Alec? Boys do cook!
Bobby stays to dish about his new show on the Food Network, Throwdown with Bobby Flay, where Bobby competes against local food heroes. Sometimes he wins... sometimes he gets chased out of town.
"It's a show about cooks who are the best of the best at what they do -- best barbeque, best pizza, best chili. We go there ... and I show up and cook what they're famous for. And then they kill me and send me back to New York," he jokes.
He and Rachael whip up a Sausage, Mushroom & Polenta Lasagna and Bobby can't resist sneaking a bite right out of the pot!
