Colby's Nose Surgery
Check it out -- Colby's on the message boards answering your questions!
After trying several products in the Human Lab: Snoring edition, Rachael's buddy Colby still found himself unable to get a restful night's sleep. Finally, a trip to a sleep clinic uncovered the cause of his snoring: a deviated septum. Dr. Raj Kanodia, a board-certified plastic surgeon, explains exactly what the diagnosis means. "The septum is a wall inside the nose and it's protected by the two outside walls," he says. "It's supposed to go down straight and divided the nose into the left and right side." When it becomes twisted like Colby's due to a trauma like a broken nose, it can greatly impede your ability to breathe.
Colby agrees to undergo surgery to correct his septum, and Dr. Kanodia has some good news for him. "We're going to be doing everything from the inside," he tells Colby. "There are no outside cuts, and no bruising because we're not breaking any bones. So the recovery should be easy -- just two days of discomfort because you'll have sponges up there." Watch the video above to see Colby's surgery and the amazing before and after photos.
Back in the studio, Colby shares how things have changed since the surgery. "Can you believe it has barely been a week since my surgery," he says, "and no bruising, no swelling, and I can't quantify how much better I can breathe. I can't tell you the quality of sleep I'm getting and the amount of sleep I'm getting." In fact, as hidden cameras show, even Colby's dog Deuce doesn't leave the bedroom any more to free himself of the snoring!
Dr. Kanodia offers a few suggestions for those who want to reduce their snoring but cannot have the surgery like Colby. "If it's assumed that it's due to a deviated septum and you can't fix it," he says, "then you should reduce the swelling inside your nose, and that's caused by air conditioning -- if you run that all night (or a heater), that causes more swelling and impedes the breathing. Having a humidifier allows the air to be moist so you don't have the irritation."
But Colby just can't bring himself to follow another of Dr. Kanodia's suggestions -- to avoid sleeping with your pets. "I can't kick Deuce out," he smiles. "I just can't do it!"
