Rachael Ray: Rachael's Daytime Talkshow

Dr. Phil

Dr. Phil
Aired on: November 10, 2010

After seven New York Times best-selling books and nine seasons of his own talk show, can Dr. Phil, daytime’s undisputed king of tough talk, still be surprised by some of the problems facing his viewers? Melody, 27, thinks her husband Justin is too intense with his emotions and is worried that he won’t be taken seriously, and that his tendency to display this softer side with will turn their sons into wimps. Dr. Phil explains that most people grow up with the mistaken idea that you have to be a “macho man" all the time. "Let me tell you," he says, "big boys don’t cry, but men do.”

Dr. Phil recalls one of the goals he set when he started helping people with their issues. “One of the things we want to do is deal with the silent epidemics in America," he says. "Those things that are important, but they don’t get a lot of attention.” Recently, Dr. Phil has put more focus on the issue of domestic violence in his “End the Silence on Domestic Violence” campaign, explaining that one out of every four women has been physically abused, and it is still the most under reported phenomenon in the mental health arena.

In addition to his time dedicated to addressing domestic violence, Dr. Phil has added a new twist to his show. He now dedicates one show a week to the "Dr. Phil Housewives" - six women brought together for six different reasons, with Dr. Phil having no prior knowledge of the women and their lives. He says this gave him the chance to get to know them the same way the audience does and says that this show has something for everybody. “This is one of the most successful series we’ve ever done," he tells Rachael. "People are addicted to it, and I love it!”
