Eat This, Not That: Halloween
Before you and your kids indulge on candy this Halloween, find out from Eat This, Not That author David Zinczenko which sweet options are the best for your health.
Hershey's Pay Day Candy Bar vs. 9 Hershey's Kisses: "This is a classic battle between love and money," David jokes, while noting each serving packs roughly 240 calories, 13 grams of fat and 12 grams of sugar. "The difference is, with the kisses that's 40 percent of your saturated fat intake. Whereas with the Pay Day it's mostly from peanuts, which are heart healthy, slow burning, muscle building; it will keep you fuller longer."
Licorice vs. Chocolate Covered Raisins: "The licorice is mostly sugar, it's like corn syrup in rope form," he says, suggesting the chocolate covered raisins as a lower-calorie option. "It's like grapes in pill form and you've got that fiber!"
Candy Corn vs. Caramels: With this comparison, David points to the classic Halloween treat of candy corn as a good alternative, because of the fat content in the caramel chews. "They're like little chocolate hamburgers! You've got 2.5 grams of saturated fat, that's 10 percent of your daily allotment of saturated fat right there." he says. "The candy corn is just sugar; it's fat free and it's going to be better for you."
