WINE CRATE OTTOMAN
What You'll Need:
• Staple gun with staples
• Cordless drill with Phillips head bit
• Scissors
• 2 wooden wine crates of equal size (if you don't have them, ask for them at your local wine store)
• 12 screws for use in wood
• 4 locking casters
• 2 leather belts with metal buckles
• Large kitchen dish towel with a cool pattern
• Dark 1-inch ribbon in a complementary color to the dish towel
• Stuffing or batting used for upholstery
• Large kitchen dish towel with a cool pattern
• 2 sets of hinges
Step-By-Step Instructions:
• Attach the casters to the 4 corners of the bottom of one of the wine crates
• Stack the other wine crate on top of the other with the open side down
• Screw the hinges into the back of each of the crates so that the crates can hinge open and closed
• Cut both of the leather belts in half
• Staple the belts onto the top and bottom of the ottoman; make sure that you staple the side with the buckle to the top of the ottoman
• Wrap batting over the top of the ottoman; staple around to keep the batting in place
• Stretch the kitchen dish towel over the batting and then staple around
• Wrap the ribbon over the edge of the kitchen towel to conceal the staples and staple it on every 4-6 inches to keep the ribbon in place
• Now store some stuff in your ottoman and put your feet up!
COOKIE CUTTER MOBILE
What You'll Need:
• Scissors
• Needle-nosed pliers
• Wire cutters
• 6 aluminum cookie cutters
• Nylon fishing line
• Decorative beads
• Ribbon
• 3 wire hangers
• Elmer's-type wood glue
Step-By-Step Instructions:
• Cut the long portion of the hanger off using your wire cutters
• Using your needle-nosed pliers, twist a loop into the center of the straight length of wire; make sure that your loop is centered so your mobile is balanced and repeat for all three lengths of wire hanger
• Using your needle nosed pliers twist little loops into the two ends of each of the three lengths of wire hanger
• Use ribbon and glue to decorate each of the cookie cutters however you'd like
• Using the nylon fishing line, tie on a cookie cutter. Repeat this for all six cookie cutters
• Add a few beads to each length of fishing line
• Use a simple slip knot to attach the cookie cutters until you are sure that both sides are balanced. Add more beads to each side until both sides are perfectly balanced.
• Use fishing line to connect each of the layers of wire hanger to one another
• Hang up your mobile and enjoy!
CUTLERY CHANDELIER
What You'll Need:
• 24 pieces of assorted silver flatware
• 1 16-inch aluminum pie/quiche pan with removable bottom
• 1 12-inch aluminum pie/quiche pan with removable bottom
• 14 inches of aluminum or stainless steel chain
• Cordless drill with 1/4-inch metal bit
• 40 stainless steel or aluminum "S" hooks
• Sharpie Marker
• Wood block to give you stability as you are drilling
• Ready-made clear colored lamp socket with plug attached
• 1 clear 75-watt bulb
• Thin aluminum wire
• Needle-nosed pliers
Step-By-Step Instructions:
• Remove the bottoms of each of the pie/quiche pans
• Using a permanent marker, mark 3 holes, equal distance apart on the bottom of the 16-inch pie pan
• Using a permanent marker, mark on the side walls of the 16-inch pie pan
• Using a permanent marker, mark 4 holes equal distance apart on the bottom of the 12-inch pie pan
• Mark holes at 1 1/2-inch intervals around the side walls of both the 16-inch and 12-inch pie pan
• Using your cordless drill, drill through the marks to create all of your holes on both of the pie pans; you will need to brace the pans against a wood block while you drill
• Attach your "S" hooks to each of the 3 holes on the bottom of the 16-inch pie pan
• Cut 3 14-inch lengths of chain (use your pliers to open a link to create equal lengths of chain)
• Hook each of the lengths of chain on to each of the 3 "S" hooks
• Using your needle-nosed pliers, pinch each of the three "S" hooks closed
• Bring the 3 8-inch lengths of chain together and attach an "S" hook to create the fixture's canopy
• Attach "S" hooks to each of the 4 holes on the bottom of the 12-inch pie pan
• Attach "S" hooks to each of the 4 holes on the sides of the 16-inch pie pan
• Cut 4 8-inch lengths of chain
• Attach each of your 4 8-inch lengths of chain to the "S" hooks in both the 12-inch and 16-inch pie pan
• Hook your "S" hooks onto each of the holes that you made 1 1/2 inches apart from one another
• Drill holes into each of the handles of your pieces of silverware; try to make sure that you make the hole as close the edge as possible so that the "S" hook will not be difficult to loop through
• Hook on an "S" hook to each of the pieces of silverware, use your pliers to tighten up each hook so the silverware doesn't slip out
• Hook your lamp up somewhere so that you can work around it easily
• Hook each piece of silverware into the holes that you already made -- you can hang the silverware either in or out. On the show I hung them out, but it is totally your preference
• Drop the lamp socket into the fixture and hook the cord through the top "S" hook on the lamp
• Attach a length of chain to the top S hook. You can cut this chain as long as you'd like -- this is the length of the drop of the fixture.
• Using short lengths of aluminum wire, tie the cord onto the length of chain to conceal the cord
• Hang up your fixture to a hook in your ceiling. Make sure that this hook is nice and sturdy since your finished fixture will be relatively heavy
• Plug in your chandelier and enjoy!
