Fashion Emergencies

Fashion Emergencies
Aired on: January 5, 2007

When Gretta asked you to submit your fashion emergencies, thousands of you responded with your style questions. She gets started with her mailbag by helping twin sisters who are obsessed with holiday sweaters, a wide-calved woman who wants to wear hot boots, and another viewer who needs help dressing for success in a male-dominated work environment.

Holiday Help

These twin sisters love dressing for the holidays but their sweater collection is getting out of control!

Gretta to the rescue! Knowing what an investment they've already made in their sweater collection, Gretta didn't want to send them out to buy all new outfits. Instead she works with a couple staple items every woman should have in their wardrobe and turns them into go-to outfits for the sisters' favorite three holidays: Christmas, Valentine's Day and July 4th. (Watch the video clip for the sister's story.)

Christmas - Layer a festive red tank top with an old suit jacket. On the bottom, you can't go wrong with a pair of velvet jeans. They're comfortable and with a little stretch, fit every size. Add a little holiday bling with a scarf. Velvet jeans, red tank and sparkly scarf -- it doesn't get more Christmas-y than that!

Valentine's Day - Rework the red tank top and layer it with a pink one and a fitted jacket. Or, wear the tank over a color long-sleeve shirt. Think you can't wear white after Labor Day? Think again. White corduroys are perfect for this outfit! This way, you're completely in the theme of the day, without wearing a bunch of hearts.

Fourth of July - What's more festive on the Fourth than dressing in red, white and blue? The blue is taken care of with your favorite pair of blue jeans. The red tank top works great for this holiday too, either as a vest over a white button-down shirt or, if you're self-conscious about wearing it so form-fitting, worn underneath.

Add some bling with festive brooches! Pin one on a wrap or clip one onto a hair band. Or, make a belt with a thick velvet ribbon and wear it with a tank top and pencil skirt!

A Woman in a Man's World
A woman in the construction industry has mostly male co-workers. She's often out on construction sites so dresses are inappropriate. She asks Gretta for tips on dressing feminine while still being taken seriously by her male counterparts.

Gretta suggests breaking up her black suits and mixing them up with other pieces, like fitted jackets and light colored tops underneath. The jackets can also go well with jeans and they're a great alternative to wearing all black.

Boots That Fit

Ever try on a pair of great boots only to struggle getting the zipper up past your ankle? According to Gretta, this is a common problem and has nothing whatsoever to do with your height or weight. For women with wide calves who want to pull off the long dress with boots look that's so popular this season, try a pair of stretch boots with spandex. Check out the thousands of pairs on zappos.com (search on "stretch/wide calf").
