You may think that you have an independent spirit as a shopper and are not swayed by salespeople and funky displays, but even the most savvy shopper can be tempted by a clever merchant. To help you understand what's going on behind-the-scenes at your favorite shops, Rachael's fashion buddy Gretta is spelling it all out to prepare you for your next shopping spree!

Expect pricey items on one side of the store. "Most of the most expensive merchandise is on the right. Why? Because 80 percent of you go here first!"

Watch out for accessories, like scarves, tied to handbags. "I want you to fall in love with the bag, but I'm hoping you like the looks of the scarf, too!"

If there's only one blouse or skirt in your size, it could be on purpose. "This makes you feel urgent, like, I better get it or my size will be gone!"

If the jeans are folded, you are more likely to make a purchase. "I went from hanging my jeans in my stores to stacking them and we’re selling triple the jeans," Gretta says. "Jeans are one of those personal items, you don’t want to have to ask for hundreds of sizes and, you know, you can be a size 26 or a size 8 in one jean and you can be a completely different size in another jean!"

A salesperson's approach could impact your willingness to use that credit card. Gretta says salespeople often abide by the "10 or 15 second rule" and make sure to greet shoppers less than one minute after they enter the shop. And if they approach too quickly, it can end up discouraging you from shopping. "I’ve had experiences where it’s too much, too soon!"

Look for sales near the back of the store. "Sale is always in the back ... They want you to walk through the good stuff!
