How to Clean Your Delicates

How to Clean Your Delicates
Aired on: July 5, 2011

Are you mourning the loss of an expensive bra that was ruined in the wash? Gretta shows you how to clean your delicates so they stay sexy and fresh!

Bras
"Lace, silk, satin, trim work ... this does not do well in any machine," Gretta says. "If the material is anything like that, the premier way to wash it is by hand." Gretta says she puts them in a little colander in the sink and uses delicate baby shampoo. "You do not want to use harsh detergents that you would use for your towels or jeans," she adds. "And concentrate on the areas that you're really going to have closest to your skin, the underwire and the arm area." Gretta warns not to wash the outside of the cup areas to heavily to prevent denting and loss of shape.

For drying, Gretta suggests taking a little towel and squeeze the water out by pressing, then remold the cups and leave them flat to dry or hang them up. As far as how often you need to wash your bras, Gretta says, "For me, it's like hair; I think a little less is more because it's going to help maintain the fabric. I would say three times a week or every other day, unless you are an active person and know you run a little hot. In that case, more of a reason to hand wash."

Undies
In addition to your thongs and lacy underwear, cottons can stretch out if they're over-laundered. "So when you wash them," Gretta says, "it's like the bras - whatever part is closest to you (and you know what I mean) concentrate on those areas of the undies, and just dip the outer areas because all you want to do here is deodorize. You don't want to scrub the fabric, especially if you're into the lacy thing; you're just going to ruin it."

Gretta rolls her undies in a towel to dry them, but if you're in a hurry she suggests hitting them with a blow dryer on warm and they'll dry in a few seconds.

Shapewear
With products like Spanx where the elastic or spandex is designed for compression and to hold you together, your best bet is to handwash them and just throw them over your drying rack.
