How to Get $400 of Groceries for $6
You've probably used coupons to save a bit on your grocery bills, but those purchases probably don't compare with the savings that the stars of TLC's Extreme Couponing rack up each week. Tiffany, a mom of 7, is a pro with the discounts, buying in bulk and saving close to $40,000 in just two years! Meanwhile, Missy says she is able to be a stay-at-home mom because of her coupon routine and saved $60,000 last year alone.
Rachael challenges them to see how much they can save while shopping for the ingredients in her new recipe - Cincinnati Sloppy Sliders! Plus, they are sharing a few of their strategies to get you started and help you lower your grocery bills:
Tiffany: Use your Sunday paper to help you plan for the week. "I look and find what protein we’re going to have for each meal, because that’s the least likely item I’m going to have a coupon on," she explains. "[I] find the best deal on that and then I kind of plan the rest of my meals around it." Tiffany also prints coupons online and says investing a little time in the process can help you save big. "I only spend about two to three hours a week doing this, but I save $1,100 or $1,200 dollars a month."
Missy: This super saver also suggests using the Sunday coupons, but has an extra trick to multiply the savings on your groceries. "You wait until [the item] is on sale," she explains, and then add the coupon to the purchase. "Get them at the rock bottom price! Don't just run out and buy it after you see it in the Sunday paper." Missy has turned couponing into a part-time job and is such a whiz, she even picks up extra items cheaply, or for free, to be donated to her local food banks. "I do over $5,000 of couponing a month!"
