"I Can't Say 'No' to Anyone!"
There's one thing about Susan that almost everyone loves -- from her daughters to salesclerks...everyone, that is, except Susan! She simply can't say no. She's been talked into ordering food she doesn't like, seeing doctors she doesn't need, and buying clothes she'll never wear.
Since the only two things Rachael can't say no to are burgers and her mama, perhaps she can give Susan some "NO"-nonsense advice to help her say that little two-letter word:
• "Waiters loves it when you clean your plate and leave the restaurant happy. How are you going to do that when you order something you don't even like and then leave it on your plate?"
• "Try going to the mall without any cash or credit cards. You can browse all you want without the pressure of having to buy anything!"
• If all else fails, Rachael's got a piece of wardrobe for Susan that just might do the trick.
Since the show...
Were you able to use some of Rachael's suggestions in restaurants or clothing stores?
It's been a lot easier for me; I was killing myself saying yes to everyone. Just last night a waiter tried to get me to order a beef dish and I said no. The people I was with were shocked: "Whoa! She's being assertive!"
Your daughters used to ask you for permission instead of their dad because you'd always say yes. Has that changed?
Yes! Now they just go to their father first, because they know I'll say no! [laughs]
Because you couldn't turn anyone down, you had booked four out-of-town seminars on the same weekend -- how did that work out?
I didn't go to any of them -- I had other plans that weekend, so I just told them all the truth!
Do you have any advice for someone else who's afraid to say no?
Be brave enough to tell the truth like Rachael does because she tells it like it is in a nice way, without hurting feelings. People will respect you more when you're not leading them on -- you shouldn't make them think you're going to do something when you really don't want to.
