Katie Couric
Millions of Americans tune in to watch Katie Couric deliver the CBS Evening News every night, but this Emmy®-winning journalist jokes she just can't win over one particular fan - her 13-year-old daughter! "I always say she doesn't want to be in the same zip code as me. You know, 13-year-old girls are tough!" Katie jokes. "She can't stand the way I chew. I swear, I chew politely."
The mother of two became known as "America's Sweetheart" during her 15-year run as co-anchor of the TODAY show. Her move to the evening news leaves her with less time for in-depth interviews so she is responding with the Internet-only interview show called @Katie Couric. Upcoming guests include Hugh Jackman, Glenn Beck, Barry Diller and Tina Brown. "I have so many different interests," Katie says. "I love politics, I love theater and movies and books ... so I miss that from the Today Show but I also of course miss Matt [Lauer]!"
She's also finding ways to get lengthier reports on the evening news, including an upcoming series on Afghanistan that will air during the first week of October. She hopes it will help people understand what's going on in the war zone. "It's I think a very important story and a very complicated story, so we'll be spending three days talking about different aspects of it," says Katie, who visited the region this past spring. "I think it's hard to separate opinion from fact, so if I can help in that arena I really want to do that."
Katie was the first female evening news anchor at a major television network, so Rachael wonders how this journalist is reacting to the news that Diane Sawyer will take on a similar post at ABC News in January. "I think it's great!" Katie responds. "The idea that men are outnumbered on the big three evening newscasts is really very unusual and extraordinary! When I started in the business there weren't many women in high ranking positions at all, so to see how far we've come is really exciting!"
