Magic Johnson's Secrets to Success

Magic Johnson's Secrets to Success
Aired on: December 1, 2008

He was always in charge on the basketball court, but Magic Johnson admits he has much less command over his kitchen when his family is cooking for the holidays. "It's about 10 to 20 women in the kitchen," he says, noting there is no tasting during the cooking. "Every male? Don't even try it. Don't even think about it. If you didn't get your drink and your chips and everything that you wanted before hand? It's over." Once it's time for the meal he always makes room for dessert. "I want all the pecan pie, sweet potato pie!"

When he's not with his family, Magic is a savvy business man and has built the Johnson Development Corp. to bring Starbucks to lower-income communities. He's sharing his tips for success in his new book 32 Ways to be a Champion in Business and says it starts with surrounding yourself with a diversified team. "I don't want 'yes' people. I want them to tell me when my idea sucks," he says. "I hire people who are smarter than myself and who will buy into the brand and then also to our mission statement, and go out there and do their job." Rachael notes it's tough to be a "control freak" as your business grows and he jokes, "But I am."
