Kevin Christiana's No-Sew Makeovers
Everyone is penny pinching right now, so letting things go to waste isn't an option. Project Runway's Kevin Christiana shows you tricks to give your wardrobe a second life using items you already have around the house!
• Turn boring dark denim into edgy, worn-in jeans. Insert a cylinder object (like a coffee cup or vase) in the leg of the jean and then start grating the jeans with a microplane, cheese grater or sandpaper. To get that blistering look, rub the jeans with a sponge that has a little bit of bleach on it. You can also put a cool emblem on the back of your jeans by dabbing a stencil cutout of the design with the bleach sponge. DIY with Kevin for $.99! Get some of his cool stencils here!
• Turn a plain-Jane T-shirt into a designer look. Celebrities are wearing them, and now you can too. Sprinkle cutouts of various designs on to a plain T-shirt. Spray it with bleach until the shirt reaches the washed-out look you desire, and then use a second spray of vinegar to stop the bleach's reaction.
• Modernize a conservative business look. Cut a button-down shirt underneath the bust line and sew it to the top of a skirt using a hand-held sewing machine. Add a belt and you have a whole new look!
• Turn dad's old sweater into a little girl's spring dress. Cut the sleeves off an old sweater around the shoulder seams. Make a hole under each arm using a pin and poke some ribbon through each side. Gather the sweater in the back by tying a bow in the ribbon and you've got a dress for your little girl!
