President Clinton
It's a monumental day for Rachael when she announces the launch of her Yum-o! organization, so it's only fitting that she has a monumental guest to share the good news -- former President Bill Clinton! Rachael explains that her organization is teaming up with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, whose mission is "to eliminate childhood obesity and to inspire all young people in the United States to develop lifelong healthy habits."
The president stresses the urgency of dealing with the epidemic of childhood obesity. "We're running the risk of raising the first generation of children in America to live shorter lives then their parents. It has never happened before, and it would be immoral if we let if happen."
One of the initiatives of the Alliance is to get schools serving healthier food, and more than 200 schools are already involved. "We'd like to have every school in America be a part of it," says President Clinton. "Some of the schools believe that they can't afford to do the onsite preparation but I think there are ways that we can help them meet this challenge. We can't just keep sending kids to school and giving them nothing but empty carbohydrates in massive volume. It's unbelievable what a lot of kids are eating in school!" Rachael heads to West Babylon High School, a shining example of how the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, in conjunction with the Yum-o! Organization, can get kids eating healthier one cafeteria at a time.
When it comes to childhood obesity, the president speaks from experience. "I weighed 185 pounds at 5'8" when I was 13 years old," he admits. Growing up in the south, the president was surrounded by fried food, which began a lifetime of bad habits that would ultimately put him on the operating table.
President Clinton tells Rachael about another partnership that the Alliance has formed. "Nickelodeon partnered with us to try to get young people involved in a playful way to become healthier, to change their lifestyles, to become more vigorous and to understand what is good food and what isn't." The president says that 200,000 kids have signed up for the Let's Just Play Go Healthy Challenge so far, including April and Kenderick, who share their progress.
Rachael and the president head to the kitchen to make some healthy recipes: Whole Wheat Spaghetti with Turkey Bolognese, Turkey Veggie Chili and Quick & Easy Pizza Dip. Rachael compliments him on his pasta stirring, but then learns that the president's kitchen skills won't be used during the campaign trail with Hillary.
