The Real-Life Julie & Julia
"The Oscars® are right around the corner and this year's biggest films are all about real life stories," Rachael says, as she introduces the author behind the smash hit Julie and Julia. "This story is something I could truly relate to!"
It's based on Julie Powell's project to challenge herself to cook a Julia Child recipe every day for a year and blog about it. Her daily updates became a book and then the star-studded movie, which earned an Oscar® nomination for Meryl Streep's performance as Julia Child. "I am completely in love with Meryl Streep, I would marry Meryl Streep!" Julie jokes.
Julie's on-screen character is played by Amy Adams, and Julie admits it's a bit of a shock to see her life on the screen. "It takes a moment to deal with the surreal-ness; I've seen it seven times now!" she says. "So I've begun to get a handle on it."
Since mastering Julia Child's recipes and seeing her story celebrated by movie fans and critics, the food writer apprenticed in a New York butcher shop for her new book Cleaving - A Story of Meat, Marriage and Obsession. Click here to read an excerpt.
Now that she has turned her kitchen habit into a career, is she still whipping up dinner every night? "I am still cooking!" Julie says. While she loves working with food, the New Yorker jokes that it has one drawback for a resident of a big restaurant town: "People are always asking me for restaurant recommendations and I have to go to other people because I don't know!
