Pam, 40, and her friend started using their lunch hour to exercise, but their workouts were leaving them unsatisfied until Pam enlisted the help of Sherry, a coworker and certified running coach. "With her help," Pam says, "we have started a group that has made exercising fun and something I look forward to doing every day." From what started as a small handful of runners, the "Lunch Ladies" has grown to almost two dozen women who run several times a week. "Instead of eating disgusting high-calorie meals at lunch, we run the Chicago lake front," Pam says. Each month, the group signs up to run an organized race, and December's event was the Santa Shuffle, a 5K (3.1 mile) race where runners dress head-to-toe in holiday garb.
