Pots

For people who don't have a lot of kitchen space, Rachael preaches against getting fulls sets of anything, including pots. "Are you ever gonna use every little pot the set comes with?" she asks. The four basic pots you should have are:

• A big, deep skillet for soups, stews, sauces or pasta toppers
• A big pasta pot
• Any size skillet to make eggs
• A medium-size pot to cook rice

For storing purposes, take the lids off, stack the pots and store them in the oven. (When you're not using it, of course!)

Knives

A knife block may be a convenient way to store a large set, but if you don't have a lot of room, you can get by with these three important knives:

A big kitchen knife that you're comfortable with

A serrated knife for bread

A pearing knife for fruit
