"I feel like every time I fly, I come home with my baggage - hopefully - and a cold for sure," says Rachael, who turns to Dr. Ian for his tips on staying healthy over the busy holiday travel season. "Travel is very dangerous from a germ standpoint," he says. "People are in confined areas, there's not a lot of fresh air flow and people are sneezing all the time and coughing." And, you're no better off when you get to your destination. "We're all hibernating inside during the cold months when the most holidays are, therefore it's easier to transmit disease."

But Dr. Ian shares a few simple precautions you can take in-flight:

Pack sanitizer wipes. Clean your airplane seat area when you get on the plane. "You know how you have to turn the vent above your seat and the lighting and all that stuff? First thing: Wipe that down immediately. No one ever cleans that," Dr. Ian says. "And that area in between [the seats] where they put your drinks down? Filthy! .... Wipe that down with your sanitizer." You can take the precautions a step further by packing special-made cloth sheets to cover your seat and tray table so when you sit down and use the table you'll know you are the only one who has touched the area!

Avoid touching bathroom door handles. "Never touch the inside handle or the locking mechanism ever," he says, suggesting you first grab a paper towel and hold that while locking and unlocking the airplane bathroom door.
