Travel Tips from The Amazing Race's Nat & Kat
Nat Strand and Kat Chang traveled the four corners of the earth to win of the 17th season of The Amazing Race, but they say their travels have only just begun! "We actually totally caught the travel bug!" Kat laughs. "It made us realize that in a short amount of time, we were going to country to country, going all over the place, and that you can fit so much into your daily life even if you have only one free day or a weekend."
The next time you hit the road, make sure you take along a few of Nat & Kat's top travel tips:
Stay hydrated. "When you're on a plane, it's actually as dry as the Sahara desert," Kat says. "So you're getting dehydrated in your nasal mucus membranes, and that decreases your natural defense mechanisms to fight off getting sick." She recommends drinking a full bottle of water for every hour of flight time.
Carry a medical kit. Nat, a Type 1 diabetic, suggests that anyone with a medical condition should pack a medical kit with everything they might need in an emergency - and have backup. During the race, Nat also carried with her a card that explained her medical condition in several different languages. Kat adds that a multi-lingual card is also great for food allergies or preferences. "I'm a vegetarian," she explains, "but if you go to certain countries they might not even understand what that concept means, so you can print that out on a piece of paper and bring it to restaurants."
Stuff your sneakers. "There's nothing worse than wet, stinky sneakers," says Kat. "Especially if you have to wear them again." She suggests stuffing each sneaker with crumbled up newspaper when you go to bed, and in the morning the newspaper will have absorbed all the extra water that causes the odor.
Double-duty cooler. Take a small cooler that you'd normally use for drinks and use it as a waterproof carrying case for your toiletries. "Your shampoo, your sunblock," Nat says. "Anything that might leak so you can keep your clothes safe. You can also use it to keep any of your medications safe."
