Where to Hide Stuff When Guests Pop By
Between shuttling her three sons back and forth to their activities, working part time and keeping the house in order, Laura -- like most moms -- has trouble juggling all the balls she has up in the air. "Sometimes something has to give," says Laura, "and it's usually the house cleaning." Watch the video above to see Laura scramble when the doorbell rings!
"I can't help you clean, but I can help you hide it!" Rachael tells Laura about her clutter.
To take care of large messes in the living room, Rach likes furniture that can perform a double duty. "I like this coffee table/ottoman that turns into a storage bin," she says. "I always end up throwing newspapers, blankets and Isaboo's toys in it." No one needs to know that the same ottoman that's perfect for putting drinks on is actually filled with your kids' toys and the dog's chewing bone.
"And this is my genius solution that I think I invented for the bathroom," says Rach. "See this big hat box? Well since so much of your bathroom space is taken up by curling irons, hairbrushes, blow-dryers and extra toilet paper rolls, I just throw them all in a decorative hat box and toss that under the sink. Then the bathroom doesn't look as cluttered." For smaller items like makeup and toothbrushes, try hiding them away in the medicine cabinet.
Rach's one pet peeve is when something or someone gets in the way of her cooking surfaces. "My husband John has a serious problem keeping the kitchen table clean -- he dumps all the mail out onto it and leaves it there," Rach admits. "And you don't want to get between me and my cooking surfaces!" Rach came up with an easy solution -- decorative stacking boxes in a variety of sizes. "I just throw the mail in these and use them as little surfaces or stack them on top of each other," she says. "Just don't forget to go through them once in a while to pay your bills!"
