Thought you'd seen the last of acid-washed jeans decades ago? The '80s look is back and Gretta's got the simple rules for rocking the latest denim trends!
**Can I Wear ... Acid Wash Denim?** "I wore acid jeans so often I cannot tell you!" says Marquita, who is thrilled to see this '80s style back in fashion. But now that she is 46, is it age-appropriate for her to wear acid-washed jeans again? As long as she sticks to dark jeans and avoids big white streaks in the fabric, which add width and weight, Gretta says she's in the clear. But don't plan on recycling the same jeans you wore in high school. "When I look back at my own horrible pictures, I had high waist and peg legs!" Gretta says. "If the cut isn't straight and modern it's going to age you."
**Can I Wear ... Denim with Denim?** Betsy, 30, can't get enough of her jeans and denim shirts and jackets, but is not sure how to wear them together. "When I match stuff up, I'm always thinking about whether or not the top is too light and the jeans are too dark, or the jeans are too light and the top is too dark, or it's too matchy-matchy," she says. "I have seen some celebrities try to pull it off like Jay Leno, and I don't want to look like that!" Gretta says the key to this style is to wear lightweight denims in contrasting colors. "Trying to match denim? Bad idea," she says. "It's just like matching black, you don't ever get it to be perfect anyway, and it's honestly a way that sort of ages the look. It doesn't make it as modern in my opinion." Instead, pair light bleached out denim pants with a dark denim jacket, black denim with gray denim, or mix accessories to break up the colors and fabrics. "You won't feel like it's such a uniform."
**Can I Wear ... a Denim Bikini?** "The trend I really want to try is a new denim bathing suit," says 20-year-old Stephanie. She's been noticing them in fashion magazines and loves the look, but is concerned about wearing such a heavy fabric on the beach. "Is it ever going to dry?" she asks. Stephanie will look and feel great in a denim bikini, Gretta suggests, because of her slim figure. Plus, she'll be comfortable and doesn't have to worry about it taking long to dry because most denim-looking suits are actually made of Lycra.
