So we asked one of the leading etiquette experts and founder of the Swann School of Protocol, Elaine Swann, to give us her top tips on how to handle awkward handshake moments in the most polite way possible.
"If someone extends their hand to you," Elaine explains, "rather than leaving them hanging, what you can do is leave your hands directly in front of you and give a nod or the namaste prayer hands are sufficient."
