How to Avoid Getting Sick

Are you trying to make it through the cold season in one piece? *Prevention* magazine editor-in-chief Liz Vaccariello breaks down three common problem areas and the steps you can take to prevent catching a cold or making your cold worse! **Ketchup bottles.** "In a typical busy restaurant, 40 people are touching that ketchup bottle every single day," Liz points out. "You pour the ketchup and then touch the fries, [and] those germs are going straight into your mouth." Liz suggests taking a wet wipe to the bottle before handling it or to your hand after using it. Or, Liz adds, "What I do is wrap a napkin around the ketchup bottle and squirt it on so I'm not touching the bottle." **Coffee**. Though coffee and tea have good antioxidants, Liz explains that you might want to cut back on the caffeine if you feel a cold coming on. "The caffeine can zap your body of zinc," she says. "We need zinc in order to heal, so if you get a cold and you don't have enough zinc, that cold could turn into the flu or pneumonia and get really bad." **Airplane seats.** "Be aware of the arms next to you and the tray table in front of you," Liz warns. "If you can, wipe those down because who knows when the last time they were cleaned!" Liz also suggests washing your hands carefully in the bathroom and using a paper towel to open the bathroom door.
