Jenny Mollen tackles difficult topics, from social media to narcissistic friends, in her first fiction book, City of Likes.
"I knew I wanted to write about [social media and narcissistic friends], but I also knew that if I didn't make this fiction, I probably would lose a lot of friends. This is my most honest book," says Jenny. "I started off with this question of, 'If you're trying to prove what kind of mom you are and how good you are as a parent all the time online, how present are you for your kids in your real life?' So, I was grappling with this issue in my own life and thought, 'I have to write about this,'" she says.
And in addition to mom life, this book is also largely about friendships.
"It's also a book about female friendships and the power of when you fall hard for a narcissist [friend] and you are that co-dependent friend and you just keep giving more and more. And how can you be Batman and Bruce Wayne at the same time, when you have a family that you have to also show up for, so it's that tight-rope walk," says Jenny.
