Lynne Spears

When Britney and Jamie Lynn Spears first entered the world of show business as little girls, there was nothing that could have prepared their mom Lynne for the media scrutiny that would soon take over all of their lives, or the personal struggles that would play out under a very public eye. Lynne tells her family's story in her new memoir, *Through the Storm*, which started out as a series of poems until she realized there was a more meaningful purpose for the book. "I felt like I needed to dig deeper," she tells Rachael. "I wanted my grandchildren to know their family. I didn't want them to believe the tabloid version. I wanted them to see what their family really is, and who we really are." During the height of the media sensation around Britney, Lynne explains that it was very difficult to be living so far from her daughter and trying to separate fact from fiction when it came to tabloid reports. "You really can't control what goes on in the media," she says, "so then you start thinking, is there a problem or isn't there a problem? And that's where I think you should go with your gut instincts when it's with your children, and if you have any doubt whatsoever, you make that trip." Rachael points out that the issues Lynne deals with as a mother are really no different than what moms throughout the country face, including Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin, who's also dealing with her teenage daughter's pregnancy in the public eye. "The way I try to relate it to other mothers," she says, "is about their kids who go off to college. Do you really see what's going on? Do you ever call your child and say, you know, something didn't sound right. Or either she was acting a little bit too happy -- is she covering up? I think those are the only things I can relate to other mothers, except the big difference was, Britney was under the microscope. Everything she was doing was exaggerated." Looking ahead, Lynne is assured that her daughter will be all right. "Britney is just a sweetheart," she says. "She's just a sweet girl. Britney's just been overwhelmed with too much." Now a grandmother of three, Lynne reveals that she found out her daughter Jamie Lynn was pregnant when the then 16-year-old girl handed her a note: "Mama, I'm pregnant. I am going to keep the baby, and everything is going to be okay." Lynne tells Rachael that through thick and thin, her biggest blessings are her children, who now share something in common with her as parents. "Even with Jamie Lynn and Britney, they both say this about their own kids -- there's no kind of love like that love." **Online only!** [Backstage, Lynne shares another story about Britney, and one of her favorite recipes.](/show/segments/view/backstage-lynn-spears/)
