It's been five years since the on-stage tiger attack almost claimed Roy Horn's life, but after a long, tough recovery, he and his partner Siegfried performed once more -- and for the final time -- on February 28, 2009. *20/20*'s Elizabeth Vargas sat down with the duo to talk about life since the incident, and how Roy is doing now. "Doctors said this man would never walk, would never talk again in his life," Elizabeth tells Rachael. "And he's doing both."
"It's incredible that he's come this far," Elizabeth remarks about Roy's catastrophic injuries (which included two strokes). "He flat-lined three times. His heart stopped beating -- they had to shock his heart into action. So he died, in essence, three times."
"A lot of people in the audience that night didn't even know something had happened," Elizabeth says about the duo's world famous tiger act, "but backstage it was quite a different matter -- it was pandemonium. Roy lost an enormous amount of blood because one of Montecore's teeth punctured an artery in his neck. Friends and colleagues and coworkers who were there in those moments said they knew instantly that this was life-threatening and that he might not survive this."
Despite the massive attack, Roy never blamed the tiger, and even helped to save the animal's life. "He maintains that Montecore was simply trying to carry him off the stage," Elizabeth relates. In fact, she tells Rachael, backstage after the incident, "All [Roy] kept saying over and over again was, 'Don't kill Montecore! Don't let them shoot Montecore.' ... animal experts agree that if Montecore had meant to kill Roy, it would have happened in a nanosecond, no doubt about that."
Having taken their last bow on stage, Elizabeth says the pair intend to continue with their animal preservation and charity work, and Roy will focus on rehabilitation, with the goal of swimming again with their tigers. As far as reuniting onstage again, Elizabeth says that a close friend of theirs predicted that Siegfried and Roy would figure out another reason to come back some day.
